Eriana arrived not long after Cary had stuffed down a couple of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, while everyone was coordinating the logistics of getting to the location where Holland was waiting.

And she brought Sheldon with her.

“No,” Cary said, seeing the young man, standing but still looking the worse for wear from his last interaction with Holland. “No. You’re not recovered yet. You have no powers left. And Holland has body hopped into you once. That happens again, he’ll kill you. And you’ll be an easy target for it now. No. You stay as far away from him as possible.”

“I’m going,” Sheldon said, his voice hoarse and deep from the damage having a literal demon inside his body had done to him. “You’re not my boss.”

“Ha! As if I would be.”

“And you’re not my mother.”

“Which we’re both glad about. Plus, I’m not old enough.” She scowled.

“I’m seeing this through to the end. The old wizard’s research is destroyed. I’m done with body swaps. But I’ve been inside Holland’s body, heard the echoes of his thoughts and dreams…nightmares. You’ll need me.”

“To do what?” She softened her tone because she knew this was a sore spot for him, and even though she still didn’t like him, she also didn’t want to purposefully hurt him. “You don’t have any magic anymore, Sheldon. How will you help? You’ll be one more person we have to protect.” And she wasn’t a Protector at the moment. At least not the kind with a super convenient, impenetrable shield.

“I kept some of the spells the triad sold me,” Sheldon said.

“And they’ll be there, probably channeling the Angel of Death, which means they can break the spells they sold you. Also, remember, they sold you stuff that would let them secretly spy on you. What makes you think you can trust anything else they gave you?”

“I managed to…twist the ones I kept. I experimented on them. I can’t make witch magic work. But I could use what they gave me and…improve on it.”

She hung her head. “I don’t want to know what you did, do I?” she muttered. But really, she needed to know, so she raised her head and said, “Tell me.”

“Mostly they’re illusion spells,” Sheldon said.

“Illusions? Against demons?”

“Yes,” he said, so confidently Cary blinked.

“Well. Okay then. If it’s anything but illusions, though, warn me. I don’t want any surprises. And I swear to the universe if you body swap with that demon again…” She had no idea what she’d do. Another swap with Holland would kill Sheldon. And for complicated reasons, she didn’t want that to happen.

“I don’t want to go through that again either,” he said, with feeling. “Trust me.”

She didn’t trust him, though, and that was the problem. But she would rather have him where she could keep an eye on him than have him running around secretly trying to do…whatever he intended to do.

“Fine. But keep behind the Protectors, all right? No heroics.”

“Protectors?” he asked, his brows raised.

She ignored the question to answer her front door when the bell chimed, announcing the arrival of the leopard shifters.
